Solid game - I did indeed enjoy playing this. However, once you figure out the core mechanics (like size being tied to health and the three lives system), it becomes a bit easy, but the simplicity and ease of play make it a great experience overall.
Took me a bit to realize what was going on: size is health - shoot you lose size, touching bullets you lose size, eating food stars gains size and you can overfeed or die from being to small.
most bullet games I've played you benefit from being far away from the enemy so the bullets have time to spread out, in this case you also "heal" while hugging the left wall by just going up and down with the penguin throwing stars.
it leads to dull gameplay where you basically dont have to worry about dying from bullets because your being pumped with health. dying from being too big is also a non factor because you dont really every stop shooting in these types of games.
personally i think this game could benefit from
- reasons to not always be hugging the left wall
- less slippery controls or bullet patterns that are better designed for a slippery bullet hell game
- more variation in the way you have to collect health ie not just slowly moving up and down
- tie shooting mechanic more to size mechanic ie - smaller weaker shots when your are smaller and vice versa
- visually more clarity when your one size up from losing health and one size down from losing health
- make health look visually more friendly instead of dark black stars w purple trails
- disconnect in model visual style - the shark is shaded smooth with high poly count but the icebergs are low poly and not shaded smooth
Thanks for releasing this game! The seal is very cute.
Thank you for playing our game! The idea was that the penguin was going to have its own pattern as well. So that the left side is supposed to be "bullet heaven" and the right side was "bullet hell". The programmer in charge of both the penguin and orca's bullet patterns had some problems implementing them and we just ran out of time.
